Miss Murray’s Class News 4/26/24
We had a great week together in Kindergarten! Take a peek at what we have been up to this week!
Sight Words: many and them
Phonics: This week we focused on consonant blends pl, bl, sl and fl. Ask your child if they can think of words that begin with these blends!
Literacy Centers: We continue with iPads, sight word center, independent reading, reading groups, and phonics center. At the phonics center, students played “roll and cover.” Students rolled letter dice, read the word they made, decided if it was a real or nonsense word, then wrote it on a white board. If it was a real word, they located it on their picture sheet and put a marker on it. The goal was to get four in a row. Students continue to read along with stories on the iPads and read books independently in the library center searching for blends. Students continue to love getting new decodable books and working in their Explode the Code books during reading groups! They are making such great progress!
Writer’s Workshop: In honor of Earth Day, we wrote a letter to Mother Earth about what we can do to help our planet. Recycling, picking up litter, turning off lights, and planting trees are all ways we can help our Earth be a better place to live! We practiced editing sentences to make sure they have a capital letter, finger spaces, and punctuation at the end. Students also water colored their own version of Earth!
Math: We finished up chapter 7 and began chapter 8: Measurement. We used unifix cubes to help us compare and contrast different lengths of objects. We continue to master addition and subtraction to 10 using number lines, counters, and mental math!
Science: We continued to observe the amazing cycle of a butterfly’s life in our classroom. We are scientists and keeping an observation journal, drawing realistic pictures of our caterpillars, and writing what they observe! This week our caterpillars have grown, they are fuzzy, they are moving around and shedding their skin. We can’t wait for them to turn into butterflies!
Second Step: This week we talked about why kind acts are important. Being kind helps us and others feel included and special! Ask your child one way they have been kind this week!
